I picked up a pretty mint condition 2012 bishop in a trade. It runs carts fine but when I use traditional needles it is loud as all hell after about 8 volts. I tried different needles, different bends, different tubes, and can't get it to calm its tits. Any ideas?

I would take the machine apart clean all the old lube/oil out. Replace the spring, Replace the slide and re lube everything and you should be golden. The slide is not mandatory but doing that you would basically be rebuilding the machine so why not everything would cost you like $30 from bishop the people over their are hella cool.

I bet it is the spring because if you are use carts and it is fine-they are putting the proper tension on the slide. I had that happen one time on a neotat-the spring was broken in half but was still in there looking together and I did not find out till I took the slide out. Are it might be the spring is just weak and runs great with the pressure from the cart added to it. I would just buy a bunch of springs at one time. Also if you get a extra slide you can use a razor blade to cut off the prongs on one of them so you get a bit of damping from a soft gromment if the clip slide is just to rigid for you. Of course if you use standard needles you would have to use a needle runner or rubberbands.Works great with carts. Its pretty easy slice them off flush and use a fine sandpaper to make it look like it was made that way. Works great for lining and color work and a bit softer on the greys.

There is a youtube video on how to detail the bishop,
mine was noisy on a cheap hurricane power supply but runs smoother now on a better power supply

Mine gets noisy with a normal grommet. I switched it out for silicone and it's back to near silent. Also the needle sits better in the tube.

Also I can now push the slide down when it isn't running.

Sounds like the bearing is shot. My Bishops are almost silent. Run the motor outside of the frame and see what happens.

Popped it in the mail and sent it to bishop for repair. Thing ran great when I first received it in a trade and now it seemed to have lost a little punch and got noisy. Just my luck. Bearing had a little play in it. But nothing too bad.
