I am just curious, can I buy a replacement? I want to just do it myself. I am having trouble ordering from stylus and want my machine to work again. Any help such as model number? Or any upgraded motor types would be helpful. If I can use a Maxon, life would be good again.

It's a Faulhaber pancake motor. It's the same as the Centri. If you search there was a thread about the motor in the Centri and the builder of the stylus chimed in to say he used the same one.

Thank you so much Owls Den. Would anyone know a similar motor that's made by maxon?

The best things to do is once you have the specs of the Faulhaber then go look on the Maxon website and see if they make one the same size. But you just have to open your stylus and read the number off the back. I think it is a 2212. Or something similar

I'm interested in this also. I want a faster motor in my stylus's. I know rick has been working on the new motor upgrade but I wonder if there's a better pancake style motor so that the machine stays super small

Thanks again OwlsDen. Your information and help is priceless! And once I get the maxon that works, I will post the model number.

Hi guys ,

I do believe he is correct on there not being a Maxon replacement. These type of motors are not common and if you do find one like it, most likely wit will be a brushless one and need a special controller. Although I believe Sanyo ( or another Japanese manufacture ) built some in this style for Walkmans and smaller VCRs although I believe they are very slow around 3000rpm where as you really need 9000rpm or higher

^and that's why stylus motors don't last lol. You have to run them above their max voltage rating to get the machine to run fast enough to tattoo comfortably. They are a 12v max yet when you buy one you're told to run them 12.5v which is still less than 100hz when loaded with a small mag or liner. At least that's my experience .

I think Jack was on the money for the model number too.

Jack your the best! OwlsDen appreciate the link. But do we have any other artists that have tried different motors and had better results. Share the experience

What I mean to ask are there any other artist or builders that have used a different motor, be it maxon or any other maker.

I love my stylus, ben running mine for over a year, I've used 27mags,, and I don't need to ever go over 13 volts,, its just anough power to do it all,, most the time I use 13mag bugpin, at 11volts,

So wouldn't the 24v version be better or would that be too powerful? It's the same size and the numbers are similar?

I personally believe it is going to be better ... it has just a bit more speed .. but you will need a power supply that goes up to 24V. because probably the sweet point will be around 20-24V. I would give it a try if I were you.. it should run a bit better .. only issue is to find the power supply .
Good luck.

This was up on Stylus Instagram. So it's definitely a Maxon and doesn't look like a pancake motor either?

Yeah i know but the upgrade is $275 plus when i bought my Stylus i had to pay £50 import tax. So that would be around $350 just for a new motor?! I'd rather do it myself.

I.m with you on that , I.ve had a lot of trouble also importing stuff , paying taxes , sending stuff back .. you name it ...
but in this case you can not do the motor update yourself.. the first stylus is a direct drive basically, the T2 has a vertical motor , different drive system , longer body...
Buy a new motor and change it , would be cheaper , quicker and easier ...
