Well I thought I would make a dd today as my car needed it's breaks bleeding so while I was at my workshop I made thishttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160308/031180b66dd4f1f14818f7e88de89f5c.jpg
Not the easiest thing to do in a workshop made for making motorbikes and stuff every thing is to big.. but I gave it ago. Motors from some crap Chinese rip off jack hammer, cam is off eBay for 2.99 and the rest is metal I had about. Works well but it's not hard for a dd but the way it tattoos I now thinking why do we pay for such high end machines? Do we over engineer things now? Or is it just gimmicks ?

Definitely! The more over engineered the more money that can be extracted :) Tried the exact same thing yesterday afternoon, was stumped by a handmade tube vice and a shite pillar drill , so a massive temper tantrum was the result here !! May come back to it when my will power returns!

How do you sort the cams out .. the ones of eBay are cheap at £2.63 shipped. But I think it's about 2.5ish. Would be good to have 4mm or even adjustable. .

I tattooed a guy in a machine shop and he made a few for me. Mine are 4.2mm. However I think Nedz sells some adjustable ones for about 20€

All depends on the output shaft size. Neds sells adjustable cams. HM adjustable cams look good but they dont sell them.

Looked on nedz site and couldn't find any. . But akart might be a good choice ..

Also if the hole in the cam is larger than the motor shaft, a sleeve can be made out of tin foil, mould it onto an allen key first :)

29655Finally walked out of the shed smiling triumphantly , maxon motor from ebay , some pipe fittings , an old base plate and vice and a very nice 4.2 mm cam from AK Art . Gave it a quick run out and it works like a charm:)

That looks a nice little hunny. I bought a dd from art and a few more cams. Used his dd today was nice smooth worth £65 . But ive just bought a few motors from maplin when they arrive with the ally plate my mate has bought round im going to give it another go. Getting mad for dds haha .

I'd buy one off you, I love my DD and there's always room for one more. There's no way I could make one as I have fingers like cows tits when it comes to anything technical like this.

So I mean, aside from stroke, torque, and weight I really don't see how performance can differ too much with directs. Am I wrong?

The thing is with dds is any one can make them.. from anything. The only bit thats the pain is the cam. The rest is great to find and put together and they will work and put ink in no probs. I use carts with mine as it takes out all the wopple of a normal needle in a dd. jesse most rotaries are based round a dd princables. Slide rotaries are dds with the cam goes to a slide then to the needle. Because its wrapped in a nice design of ally and plastic and has $400 price tag, most dds costing $20 would do the same..my next dds motors are these http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160323/aff53d9d96e8eaf42265f0f0b3ecde0f.jpg for the fun of making dds.

You are quite right in my opinion, this homemade one performs pretty much identical to a relatively expensive dd , using a guitar tuner app for experiments sake , they both behave the same at the same speeds , hope that makes sense

Heres a new dd i made today. Classic frame set up. Motor is 3-7v £5. cam ebay £2.60. £1 for the rca connector. Alloy from a friend. Took me about cupple of hours to drill and tap and to fit it together. Runs fast. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160412/af2b9dfbbc6b5d1cf152c0ab2f723d02.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160412/61102bbcb6d4b9fce353c1170cbf100e.jpg
Just found some carbon fibre so that might be the next frame.. and ive talk to a mate makes damascus steel for knifes so might go down that road. I'll post the frame in blue print so people can have ago in making their own..

Hey. Anyone know where to buy medium-long stroke (3.5-4.5) cams with needlepin for grommets fitting the motor shaft on the motors used by rotary works? I want to replace the original cam to avoid opening needle loops and be able to have a little "grommet give".

Thanks man! Too bad they only carry 3.5 strokes. Want to find something longer for those nice whips :)

I made this frame today. Just thought I'd share. It's black acrylic and weighs nothing. I just have to bolt all the parts together now.
