Yeah oils are tricky, great for layering depth... Gotta be patient though sometimes....
That's pretty damn sweet for a first time, very nice composition. Could I suggest a bit more white highlites on the eye ridges to match the nose? Only thing that stands out to me.

Very nice for first oil. You could have the skull resting on the back of its head (even with a piece missing) and have a single source of light. So in effect the skull is looking upwards, towards the light, with its contents, having left the body long ago. The time element could be shown with cobwebs, or dust. Death and the light, or sort of ancient death and glory. The dark parts of the skull could have a light background, and visa versa. Although I understand you are simply experimenting with oils.

Nice I literally just put some finishing touches on an oil painting I've been working on. Very tough medium to get a handle on thats for sure. Try using acrylic paint as an under painting. Like warm greys just to get an idea of your lights darks and highlights then go into oil and adjust as necessary I found it works for me pretty well
