Really like everything about the mermaid, nice tat! You might condense that video on the next take, I couldn't sit through it with my short little attention span :-) nice looking machine

I absolutely love mine. Ill post some photos of stuff I've done with it and a review soon. But it's the best machine running cartridges i've used so far. SEriously fun to tattoo with.

I have been want to try a hawk etc but the one question I have and always turned me off was the depth adjustment -they all look like they would turn while you tattoo very easy which would make the stroke vary.

The grips stay put... Even more so with this machine because there isn't the weight of a motor hanging off at a 90 degree angle. You might twist the grip if your not paying attention when you change cartridges but it would be a tiny tiny amount if any. You'd get used to it after 2 tattoos.

Stylus Machine

yes, there is an O-ring on the grip that holds just enough tension for the grip to stay in place.

runs very nice, like the felxibility of being able to turn this in lots of driections and angles..Can you adjust needle hang?

Stylus Machine
10-12-2012, 04:25 PM
yes, i left the needle out just a bit more than the 4mm it already runs out. that was a main concern for me, i like to run my needles waaay out.
the hawk cartridges get really tense when you run them that far out.
no prob with the ttechs.

Well I'm guessing it feels pretty similar to using the hawk... And I fucking love mine. Been looking into maybe getting a thunder until I seen this just now lol. I will own one of these for sure

never tried the t-techs on the fact that I read somewhere that they are not sterile? but this sure does look interesting.

Tkocevar1
10-12-2012, 09:00 PM
^ that's a topic that can go round and round..

Stylus Machine
10-12-2012, 09:05 PM
it has a similar feel to the hawk, without the extra weight up top.

In reality, even Hawk cartridges are not sterile either. unless you do very precise handling and never have to clean your needles.
wrapping your grips only gives the illusion of being sterile.
but the only way to do it is the autoclave.
i think ttech has a better selection of cartridges, even though they do need a bit more selection. They have been very consistent. i think i have had maybe 1 or 2 cartridges that were bad in the past year or so.

So you don't think madacide or other cold sterilants between tattoos accompanied with bagging is enough?

It reminds me of tattooing with the spirit with a longer throw. That's pretty close to how it hits and how it sounds(except the stylus is quieter). It feels like one of those king sized sharpies in your hand... And it tattoos like one too. I probably won't use my thunder ever again.

Tkocevar1
10-12-2012, 11:15 PM
Hmmm. Definitely something to think about. I'm very interested in this machine. Even though it could be mistaken for a dildo. It just looks like it weighs absolutely nothing.. And that makes my hand feel good

I got my machine on Monday super fast shipping. Have yet to use it. But it sounds great just by running it. Rick (right?) I just may be interested in letting you fiddle with my hawk now. Say you just adjust the stroke length. How much would you charge for that. Could you set it to any stroke length say I want it 3.2 instead of 4

i should have about 6-7 ready in the next 2 weeks. soft or Hard, i would just need to know what colors and type you want so i can build to suit.
i placed an order for more motors and it should be arriving in a week or 2. i have a few frames finished, anodized and ready to be assembled.
i should have another 15 ready before the 15th of Nov for the Richmond Va tattoo con.
if anyone is gonna be out there and wants to try it out just send me an email.
[email protected]
this is still a very small operation im running. the machines are cnc milled by a local shop here in chicago. i do the polishing/anodizing and wiring in my studio.
im glad everyone that has purchased a machine so far has been happy with it.

@Tkocevar1 (http://www.rotarytattoo.com/member.php/2406-Tkocevar1)
i can customize your hawk as much as you want i can only do 4mm stroke for the time being. since its the only length i set up with my machinist.
i can just switch the cam out for one of mine for $50 but if you want to commit and crack it open it takes a bit more work lol. i can powder coat the grip and housing a few different colors. like this--->

Thats awesome! glad you like the machine man.. That white machine is my baby right now, i think ive only used it a few times lol
@sleezy23 (http://www.rotarytattoo.com/member.php/3411-sleezy23) the soft machine only does soft. the system works similar to a spring on a coil machine but is backed up by a brushless motor. i like using it for portraits and softer stuff.

Hi, I love my thunder most for lining and packing but after reading that, I get shocked. This machine seems to overpass the thunder. How do you compare the stylus with the thunder in fine lining, one pass power lining, etc? I it would be a fair comparison since both are cartridge dependent, quiet, and pencil like compared with other machines.

My thunder just fails more when using on fatty skin like belly or elbows so I have to change to a bavarian custom coil. I guess that since rotaries pinch in a different way of coils ( less instantaneous impact) they are not so able to enter the skin as easily, instead just push it a little before it enter.

Is this a rotary machine or it uses a system like a doorbell ( I experiment myself with a doorbell mechanism and I guess is the system used in the LOD machine )

I haven't used a coil in forever, so I can't really compare. The stylus works perfect for me.... From single needles to 13r shaders it makes solid one pass lines. The stylus is a direct drive basically. I'm super curious to try the soft machine as I only have the hard version.

Pretty much settled in at 10.5 volts for almost everything maybe 11.5 volts for big liners and bigger mags.

If you check out the one offs that Rick did on the Stylus Facebook page you can see how it is setup. Direct drive with a clever bend on the plunger arm to keep it compact.

The rca is fine. But ya I used mine on 13 volts and it was better I think its just a lot different getting used to a direct drive o expected the no give in this machine to perform just like a vivace of capo but it has a much different feel on the skin softer almost

rick gave me some advice on that. he said he runs his constant, no footswitch. run it and then insert the cartridge while its running. i started doing that again and havent had any problems. also, a lil A&D on the ball will lube it up and possibly help with your problem. i started lubing mine and running constant, and havent had any issues since. i use mine on almost every tattoo now! cheers- Eric
