14933149341493514936 Here are my 2 Dk Mini Crankers..The Mercedes Blue w/Laser Copper is the new MC-13 and the Mint Green w/Matte Black is #67 of the original..These are amazing little machines and look so darn cool..The Mint Green is at a 4mm stroke and mostly used as a liner..The MC-13(blue) is set up at a 3.3mm stroke for shading and color blending.I must say it is a little quieter and smoother than the original Cranker. The bearings in the pivot set up make for a smoother motion..All the upgrades are really awesome and very functional..The new vice seems great and more disposable friendly..The new Dial on the flywheel makes adjusting the stroke to the proper length much easier than before..I know there are a good amout of Mini Cranker users on here and everybody has different color combos so lets see your Dan Kubin machines!!post some pictures!Pinkfro had a good idea with a "show me your Cranker thread" so here it is..Post a pic of any DK machine you have!

Hey Casey can you still run a clip cord on it with the RCA conversion? I love RCA but I can't seem to find a cord that holds up more than a month or two and its back to a clippy.

Can run both rca and clippy on these mate, very easy conversion. Have just made some heavy duty cables utilizing guitar cable and some nakamichi rca's with a decent cable clamp for myself and the other lads at the studio to test out, will let you know how they get on

I love mine too Paul. Just got a new adjustable cranker off Dan, set at 5mm. Puts solid big group lines in with ease. Never thought i'd make the switch to lining fully with a rotary, but the Soba Pilot is getting used less and less nowadys. Got one of Dans mini direct drives too, and that machine is a monster for colour. Heres my babies the heat treated machine was a trade from Skinmech.14955

2 of the thumscrews are WHI theyre really great perfect size to tighten the tube vice without force. The other one is an Aaron Cain thumbscrew its a little smaller and I need a lot of force to get the tube vice tight enough for disposables.

The needle tensioners are awesome I took the idea from Sage OZ and made a 5 bucks 10 minute solution for my machines. Sages are way nicer but so far hey work pretty well its the same precison you have with a needle clip on the Bishop you can look from each side and there is absolutely no sideways movement from the needle. Feels like a precision tool at least for my liking.

Just a quick question. Do you guys use the vertical band to help with "punch" on the downstroke? The only downside I find with this is the needle is always out when the pedal in depressed, so when using small caps the danger of banging the needles is more likely?

I guess its just the rubber band thats used while tattooing?

I use the band more as a stabiliser than to increase the force of the downstroke. I don't think it has any bearing on the downstroke, and even without the vertical band your needle can still hang out as there is no "return spring" system. I use the needle hanging out when stopped to my advantage, spesh when I don't want to load my tube tip, I just use the needle tip like a quill pen-for very small details and script.....TBH Works just as well without the vertical band....

Cheers for the reply Paul. I know theres no return, but I get wary of the needle hang when dipping, so I tend to give the pedal a small tap to try and get most of it back in. I hang it out looooong ya see. Just got a new one thats set at 5 mil with most of the stroke hung out. I was thinking of trying to connect a spring under the abar to push against the motor housing, to encourage the return, but I dont want to strain the motor by introducing any force against the function.

Don't obsess over return springs, the theory is "would you drive a car with the hand brake on". I know quite a few Rotary users who when using machines like DFs, remove the return springs , apparantly the machines' performance then improves. Please, don't risk damaging your Cranker.

Thanks for the advice Peter. Thats made my mind up. If its not broke, dont fix it I suppose. I love the machine as it is, so the return spring idea is getting binned.

I'm probably one of the only guys who actually prefers no return spring, it just makes it that much easier to check and adjust my needle float during setup.

Very nice, I've yet to try any of my crankers at a short stroke for B&G, are you liking it?

pinkfro
12-09-2012, 02:32 AM
its actually awesome. At first i tried running it slower for B&G and hated it so i talked to dan and he said run it around 7 (which is what I run both of my machines at now) and i have been using it with needlejig bugpin round mags and yeah i like it alot. I dont do a ton of black and grey and I actually tried it out with some color I love it for softer blended colorwork. I dont think it would go over incredibly well for straight up single shade packing but its really a lovely machine. Id love to have like 10 more. Someday :)

ive used my MC-13 a few times already it is AMAZING!Dan sent it to me with a 3.3mm stroke for shading/coloring and it is an absolute pleasure to use..going from my Bishop to the MC-13 at 3.3mm took zero time for me to get used to it..Also the MC-13 is a tad lighter than the original Cranker. On the scale I had 3.9oz for the MC-13 and the og Mini Cranker was 4.3oz..the tube vice is great too,my disposables and s.s fit perfectly and tighten with barely any force on the wingnut..the other thing is the MC-13 is definitly a little quieter and smoother too..the new pivot set up with the bearings makes it run really smooth..I wasnt sure how much better Dan was able to get the Mini Crankers but he DEFINITLY did take it up a notch with the MC-13..

Got my new one on the way. Its a father christmas coloured cranker, keeping in with the seasonal tidings. Just while im on this thread again, been trying to use the hairband style bands, but been having loads of issues with them breaking every 5 mins, ive even added some shrink tubing to the band retaining screws because I thought the thread was causing the breaks, but it made no difference. Ive reverted to going back to 2x regular bands with a "good" bend on the needle.

sacredsouls
12-20-2012, 07:46 PM
I use one regular rubber band with a bend on the bar and it works fine. I can't see why you would need more than that.

skinmech
12-20-2012, 08:05 PM
I need to ask, why the "hair bands" are you are talking about the small ones that can be used with a Halo..

Mozzer337
12-20-2012, 08:30 PM
Im not too sure if they are the Halo style bands, as ive never used a Halo Paul, but I tried with the black bands you supplied with the cranker we traded, and I bought some slightly tighter ones too. Both dont last too long. Im using no 14 bands now, 2 of them. If I get the bend just right (I try to get the bend near the top of the tube), and use 2 of these bands with a bit of stretch to free them up, prior to placing them, I get a nice clean stroke with no friction and a good ink flow. I maybe have too much tension on the needle bar though, considering im using 2 bands. I know these hair type bands get used frequently by other forum members. Just dont seem to work with me. For what its worth I use my crankers around the 6.5 to 7 volt range.

skinmech
12-20-2012, 08:54 PM
I don't understand why people feel the need to bend the Bar, I totally understand the concept, but. If your Machine is set up correctly, there is no need to bend so the needles sit towards the back of your tip...Think about it, you are bending your bar/solder/needles " out the way" so that the "bands" will draw the needles "back in the way, under pressure", or, put another way, towards the back of the tip, and run straighter....If you feel the need to bend anything, "carefully" bend the needles them selves inwards, and let the bands do the rest..
