So I finnally was able to get up the nerve to take my dremel to one of my halos. Its still raw so far, only antiqued a bit to show some details.

What did you use for the blackening?

Just used a black marker and wiped it off the higher areas. Only to help show the depth of the carving. Its hard to photograph brushed aluminum. Still thinking of how to finish it.

I'm thinking you should stick with some kind of antiquing regardless if you do it with a colored finish or not.

I agree. Its actually a very deep carving and pretty busy to boot. Without any antiquing its hard to make out what all is going on. I'm thinking of a translucent candy finish. Maybe red over a more carefully executed antique. Should be pretty sweet. Anyone have any recommendations on a paint that will stay well on an alluminum frame?

LOL you have balls enough to do this bad ass carving but not to airbrush it. That cracks me up. Nice work.

would you tumble it after this or leave it pretty raw? Just polish it a bunch or brush it?

That looks really cool, its got a kinda medieval look to it so I'd be half tempted to brass or at a push copper plate it.

Aged/Patinaed copper plate would look awesome!

An antiqued copper patina would be really nice. I'm going to look into ways to do it.

If you think you'll be doing more than one take a look here http://www.caswellplating.com/electroplating-anodizing/copper-plating-kits.html

nice loving it :) use house of color true candy apple as its an ink rather than paint and will stick to the metail and would look sick over the brushed affect and apply 3 to 4 coats of candy would look very nice indeed and apply 3 coats of clear to make it pop, hears a pic of my gtr valve cover i panted with a gold base with candy apple red over the top
hears a pic of the base coat
