View Full Version : Sleeper builders...

Ok so I am currently in the process of rebuilding my coil collection with custom one off handmade machines, no worries fellow rotary fanatics they are and will remain my daily drivers, however it's good to know where you come from and in my eyes nothing matches the time, effort, and craftsmanship that goes into a custom one off coil handmade by a talented and experienced machine builder.

That being said I would love to get websites, emails, names and numbers of all the guys that are shadowed by the amazing machines the Todd Hlavatys, Seth Ciferris, Tim Hendricks etc. are building. I know there are plenty of sleeper builders out there that aren't well known by many and I'm sure most of us know at least one. So list the info here and I will check them out one by one. It will also be a great go to thread for anyone looking to add a collector piece or daily driver machine to their arsenal.

Lets keep this free from comparison, debate, and hating. Information and coils only please. Thanks everyone Mick!!

Imo the Coil Machine equivalent of Dale at Rotaryworks, is a dude called Jacob Wekenman aka http://www.facebook.com/jacob.wekenman He is an American builder, and I have watched him grow over the years. His Coils are around $150, should be $250+ imho......He winds all his own coils, and Frames (cnc'd to his design and specs) and Hardware, are sourced locally, from reputable companies and suppliers. He is still young and can turn his hand to anything.

If you want to step into total one offs,Hand-built to your specs, and keep off the mainstream Route, then look no further than these two guys, and I ain't shitting you..

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1369786481&sk=photos Check out his pics, as he doesn't really advertise.....

I haven't seen anyone mention Don Colling. He builds both coils and rotos. Super solid builds. Everything is a one off and his rotos are hard to come by. And to date I don't think i've ever seen someone resell one of his spinners.
https://www.facebook.com/#!/don.colling?fref=ts
For coils:
Bowery Stan Moskowitz is pumping out Jonesys built the old school way that Jonesy taught him.
https://www.facebook.com/#!/bowery.moskowitz
Jay Brown is another old schooler pumping out some nice coils. Due to health issues he doesn't tattoo much anymore. He's got some great deals on coils right now because he's trying to raise money to support the Northwest Tattoo Museum he started.
His FB:
https://www.facebook.com/#!/TattoosbyJayBrown?fref=ts
The NW Tattoo museum page
https://www.facebook.com/#!/NorthwestTattooMuseum
Also Larry Hanks is building the coils too. He casts them himself and sells raw frames as well. He's either in AZ or HI depending on the season.
https://www.facebook.com/#!/larry.hanks.31?fref=ts
Last but not least Ben Euse, my main building mentor has been stepping up his coil game as of late (Thanks to Jay Brown). He's also tinkering with rotos, but he won't officially come out of the closet yet...

Cheers!

Jay Brown coils are really nicely made the oldschool way. We will be carrying them in the next two or so weeks and will also be spreading the word for his museum as well. Very cool guy that really cares about the industry.

I humble offer you build a machine for you. I build for a couple years only not that long but if you tell me what you are looking I can make you a good decent machine. I have do a lot of research on coils materials electromagnetism plus I have use myself so many brands during all my years of work, I actually will like to thanks all the industry for so much info available now day Bill Baker my respect for you and for the inspiration from all the guys like seth ciferri, aaron, soba, pike, infinite, micky sharpz, danny, and too many more to mention, pretty much I will call my machines magnet fusion but this name is already use it by the inks but will love it just don't have a name jet. I have to models with shorty coils but they run really good, just need to know for what type of needles and application you need it. I been tattooing for few years you can see my work in instagram as cubaninker and I have pictures of the two model machines I been working on the last 2 years, is like a mini roger a call atom. right now I only do it blued but soon will powder coat them for a better look and finish.
Thanks
Regards

Seth - everyone should own at least one of his liners
J. Puente - possibly the smoothest shader I have ever used
Tommy Stegall - great machines
A Cain - Kinda given but just such great machines
Lucas Ford - great light punchy machines
DJ mInor - heard nothing but great things about his machines.
Jeff Zuck - he doesn't make a lot of machines but god DAMN I love the shader I have

I know these may not be sleepers but ..

I really like T's machines https://www.facebook.com/electricsoultattoomachines the few I have ran have been super smooth.

I can vouche for T. Massari and his machines! I got a soft shader a awhile back and it's my daily driver for BnG still (and he repainted it to my favorite color to boot). I live in Lancaster which helped getting it quickly since I hate waiting for shipping. Also really great guy too if you ever do get a chance to meet him.

Mike Pike is here too. Might try to hit him up. I didn't know he was so popular until coming to this board ha!

There's this dude Old Man Terry. He's an ex-gunsmith machine builder and his shit is legit.

[email protected]

He an excellent oldschool craftsman with crazy cool machines. Real basic, bluesteel finish, no unnecessary flair and run at super low volts. Most of his run smooth at 4v unloaded. $250 a machine but I seriously think they are worth more. Guess he runs around Bakersfield and Las Vegas on his hustle.

Chris Dewitt from Amoeba Designs build rad one off coil machines. I have three of his coils, and two of his rotaries soon to have #4 of his new direct drives. On top of that my apprentice has two coils from him and the other two guys at my shop have 3 coils between them. His customer service is beyond amazing and he knows he stuff. He does carved and oil dipped or powder coated. And will build to you specs.

My new boss has been machine building for years. I help him out now and his process genuine hand made from the ground up. If anyone's interested let me know and I can arrange something. He doesn't promote but I think he should, his machines are def legit and garunteed for life.

Forgotten Ironz the shortys are $250 and the 13s are $300.

are these E.S.T.machines??

No, but it's funny you say that. The story I was told is he had worked with Brad, the EST builder, idk how long ago when he started building since Brad had good builder set up. Its my understanding they're machines are quite similar as being a shared vision on their take of a tattoo machine but the story is better from him. Not second hand from me.

I met just about everyone in the tattoo circles, including Brad, and actually owned 3 of his machines. 1 EST I still use and 2 old models I didn't really like that I no longer have. Though I have to admit while I loved my EST one, it ran way cleaner once Dfie respringed it and etc.

Dfie does rebuilds too, in case anyone is interested.
