how do you set up a rotary to make this whip texture? long stroke? fast? loads of needle? flicking up from the skin? any input is greatly appreciated, and links would be great.

I like it a lot clean, The outlines are clean as FUCK - nice whipshading - one thing that I'm not a huge fan of - how the whip shading goes one way on two of the front sections of the Locomotive and a different on the front section, making the light source change, it does it in a couple of places where your shading changes direction (and therefore light sources) on the train. On the spirals in the front it looks GREAT - adds some real nice depth. There is NO shading on the little whistle ? on the left and nothing in the "window" these both stand out to me. Not a wrong or right thing, more of a difference of opinion.

Some softer tones (less whipping and more blending) on the rose would have made the locomotive stand out even more, as well as add a softer look., but thats just my $0.02
