So I finnally was able to get up the nerve to take my dremel to one of my halos. Its still raw so far, only antiqued a bit to show some details.

What did you use for the blackening?

Just used a black marker and wiped it off the higher areas. Only to help show the depth of the carving. Its hard to photograph brushed aluminum. Still thinking of how to finish it.
I'm thinking you should stick with some kind of antiquing regardless if you do it with a colored finish or not.

I agree. Its actually a very deep carving and pretty busy to boot. Without any antiquing its hard to make out what all is going on. I'm thinking of a translucent candy finish. Maybe red over a more carefully executed antique. Should be pretty sweet. Anyone have any recommendations on a paint that will stay well on an alluminum frame?
air brush it to look old and crusty.
