No you don't need rubber bands crab. And I believe there straight mags short tapers go to 9 and anything bigger is a long taper or curved mag. There long tapers go up to 15 and there curved long taper go up to 23

Why would you ever do an american traditional piece with bugpins.... seems like sillyness. You want boldlines and peppery wips of black and color... sounds like exactly what bugpins aren't good for.
